MAKSIMS ŠENTEĻEVS / INSTRUMENTS
In recent years I feel strong fascination by physical aspects of sound. In my work it displays in very simplistic way. Intention summarizes in two basic challenges: 1 - to see mechanical transfer of sound as motion, 2 - to sense sound related components and textures from the very descent. To satisfy this demands I took inductive laboratorial approach. My strategy is to: 1 - choose simple mechanical devices such as motors for the motion impulse. 2 - build acoustic instruments from the raw material. Combination of this 2 components results in primitive instruments played by motors. What is crucial here for me is the mysticism of sound. I rather intend to witness phenomenon then control the system. In my perspective observation is the path of understanding rather then purposeful act. This statement might seem contradictious with laboratorial approach, though its not. "Sound laboratory" in my setup is "laboratory of mysticism" . Components are each time dismounted and reset on location. All devices consist from elemental parts and are assembled and tuned over again. Result is always beyond determination, and fascinating observation material is guaranteed. I call this "sound laboratory" – ghost orchestra. Quest for insight and similar inductive approach underlains project "soundscape mapping". Which includes previously mentioned methods and techniques extended into field research, resulting in what I would call - "prepared biotope".

PRAULI / LOGS
string instruments built from found timber logs – preferably very old and dry. Wood is left untouched – no cutting, no burnishing. Main criteria is resonation, that is entirely dependent on log, as no external resonators are used. Strings are recycled – any kind, rarely selfmade. Pickups – piezo disks.

GALDS / TABLE
resonating containers equipped with piezo disks and motors are used for two purposes: tables with useful surface (typical), and as instruments themselves. Even without additional objects table surfaces can be played in different ways: scratching, touching, banging, etc. Some objects used in sets sound only due to resonating volumes of containers / tables

ELEKTRO
DIY devices, simple, often ideas borrowed from someone, but made in own way, approximate is a good definition for these small things.

BOTTLESTICK
BOTTLESTICK is an analogue of South American Rainstick. Made of plastic bottle pierced with old knitting needles and filled with buttons and rice. Very fast to make, fun to play, advanced with transparency. Idea and materials by Ieva Cire. Ģikši. 2012/2013.
